For Immediate Release
YK Pang, Director of Jardine Matheson Ltd, and Chief Executive of Hongkong Land, has been re-elected Chairman of the Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce (HKGCC) for the coming year. Pang said he is delighted to be re-elected and he thanked members for their continued trust and support.
Speaking at a press conference before the Annual General Meeting, Pang said the Chamber has been stressing the need to enhanceHong Kong’s competitiveness. “It is like rowing a boat against the current; either we keep forging ahead or we will fall behind.” He added that the rule of law is the cornerstone of Hong Kong’s success. However, over-regulation will only increase businesses’ compliance costs, and add to SMEs’ burden, while at the same time underminebusinesses’ development and Hong Kong’s competiveness. He said he is particularly concernedabout how the Competition Law and standard working hours will impact businesses.
Maintaining political stability is another key concern, because it is a vital consideration for investors and companies that do business here. “The issue of constitutional reform has left society polarized and some LegCo members have launched a non-cooperation movement,” said Pang. “I do not want to see Hong Kong stagnate, nor I do not want to see people taking radical actionagain, such as the Occupy Movement. I urge all legislators from various parties to pass the constitutional reform proposals so that Hong Kong people can elect their Chief Executive by universal suffrage.”
Chamber CEO Shirley Yuen said the Chamber works hand in hand with members to serve as the voice of business, and last year presented around 40 policy submissions to Government. She added that the Chamber’s proposals for enhancingHong Kong’s competitiveness, improvingthe business environment and reducing air pollution were adopted in the recent Policy Address and the Budget.
The election was held at the inaugural meeting of the new General Committee immediately after the HKGCC’s Annual General Meeting on the evening of 18 May. Stephen Ng, Chairman & Managing Director of The Wharf (Holdings) Ltd, was also re-elected as Deputy Chairman.
The three Vice Chairmen are, respectively: Victor Li, Managing Director & Deputy Chairman of Cheung Kong (Holdings) Ltd; Aron Harilela, Chairman & CEO of Hari Harilela Ltd; and Betty Yuen, Vice Chairman of CLP Power Hong Kong Limited.
At the Annual General Meeting, members elected a total of six members to fill the seats on the General Committee – the governing body of the Chamber – who were required to step down this year. Four of them were re-elected, including Victor Li, John Slosar, Peter Wong and Betty Yuen.
