Competitiveness Being Undermined

For Immediate Release

Businesses executives attending the Joint Business Community Luncheon with the Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying today expressed their concerns about delays to crucial infrastructure projects and filibustering undermining Hong Kong’s productivity and competitiveness.

Replying to concerns raised from businesses during the question and answer session, the Chief Executive saidwe cannot afford to take our competitiveness or growth for granted. He said there was a danger of complacency creeping in and weakening our city’s future prospects.

“LegCo is now controlling the approval of crucial projects. The consequences of blocking projects will hold up $60-plus billion dollars in funding. Moreover, the project delays will cause hundreds of people to lose their jobs,” he told over 1,200 business executives at the luncheon.

Speaking on the Belt & Road initiative as a way to boost the city’s competitiveness, he said the Government’s steering committee will examine how Hong Kong can participate in the project.

“This is where we hope you, members of the business community, will share your views with us. We would like to hear which countries and sectors that you feel Hong Kong can cover as part of the Belt & Road project and our role as a super connector. In the next 12 months we will use this information to set out our plans on how Hong Kong can move forward,” he said.
